Basic Information About IELTS Speaking Test

1. 
IELTS speaking test is conducted face to pace physically with an examiner or via video call.

2. 
It is recorded so that candidates can ask for remark later if needed.

3. 
It is an informal speaking test so that candidates can speak in a normal situation and can use informal English without any hesitation.

4. 
Examiner controls the time by asking questions step by step.

5. 
The test lasts between 11 and 14 minutes.


There are three parts of speaking test:

1. Speaking part 1 (Warm-up question):
  • Duration: 4-5 minutes
  • Question Types: The examiner will ask 10-12 questions on 3 three topics and topics will be everyday topics for example: home, hometown, study, work, family, hobbies etc. The questions will not be so challenging and based on your personal experiences.

2. Speaking part 2 (Que card section):
  • Duration: 3-4 minutes
  • Question Types: You will be asked to talk on a specific topic up to 2 minutes and you will be given a topic card including some bullet points. You will be given 1 minute time and pen paper for preparing the idea to talk.

3. Speaking part 3 (Follow up question): 
  • Duration: 4-5 minutes
  • Question Types: The examiner will ask the candidates 5-6 (may vary) questions based on usually one topic (same as part 2 topic). The questions are so much complex than part 1 based on world issues. This part is called discussion part.
